  • Great for audio!

    By domingopaes
This is a great app. I love having my weekly paper on the go! This is especially great for getting the awesome audio edition for when I’m sitting in traffic or going on a long walk. Though these articles aren’t really as easy to digest aurally as, say, a radio news program or podcast is (I do love the excellent shows on Economist Radio). Still, the cast of readers is excellent, and this allows me to skim the paper while driving before finding time to return to the meatier articles in my print copy. Some nitpicks though (this isn’t a pure 5/5 app. I’m rounding up from an A-minus 4.7/5): 1) the automatic downloads aren’t reliable and I feel like I always have to check to make sure it’s downloading. And it’s quite slow to download even with my quick internet speeds at home over wifi. 2) it takes way longer than a podcast does to load up the pre-downloaded audio edition. Quite noticeably slow to get the audio tracks to play. 3) it’d be great if the settings menu would spell out an “auto delete” option so that the sizable files from older editions don’t have to be deleted manually each week.
  • Fix the Audio

    By Staaaaaaaaaaaaarwaaaaaars
The only reason to download the app is the audio of the news, and it is embarrassingly bad. The audio starts downloading and will unpredictably stop, even with a constant network connection. Restarting the app or my phone doesn’t help. Even if I have stories download, when I try to play them I get stuck on a loading screen. What is it loading!? Even when I do miraculously have the audio downloaded, the playback randomly cuts out, usually when I have the audacity to wander in range of a new WiFi network. Stick to the paper version. Seriously, how hard is it to make an app that plays audio in this day and age?
  • Downloads now turtle slow

    By dralanh1
Have tried new app. I have 1 GB connection and issue downloads extremely slow. Old app lightening quick. Plus new layout is terrible. To get to articles you have to scan far down page. Old app payed out like magazine. I’m sticking with old app.
  • App is terrible for audio version

    By Meenali
I enjoy the economist and used to live listening to the audio version. The most recent version of the app no longer allows you to download the audio and it always tries to steam this. If you are offline or in an air play it is impossible to listen to this now. Even on a WiFi hotspot you may need to wait 10 minutes to hear one article. It was much better when it downloaded the entire audio edition and you could play it. Please bring this back - the current version is unusable for people trying to list yo the on trains/airplanes/underground or anywhere with less than high speed broadband access.
  • Trusted and Insightful

I am an American University student. This publication has the most professional and accountable articles I can find. It is really is the “one stop shop” for world news and analysis. Good Work
  • Not Free At All - Should Disclose Before Download

    By ysvahjzywgy
There is ZERO part of this that is free or eve allows for college discount! This should be fully disclosed that EVERY article prompts for you to BUY BUY BUY! Great lesson “Economist”, thanks.
  • Good content, sometimes glitchy app

Great content for reading and listening. Sometimes glitchy app with freezes and failure to load articles.
  • Steadily sinking in quality

    By masterbluestar
Apart from the horrible design and persistent audio playback issues that went on for months, now the article readers’ quality is going down. There’s no excuse for this especially considering the cost of subscription. Readers used to be good but lately are more annoying than pleasant to listen to. This includes some new guy who can barely read and sounds like some taxi driver from East London with a heavy accent. I understand that this may well be because of “diversity and inclusion“ but what I say to that is that quality still matters. What the economist doesn’t understand is that I don’t want to listen to that kind of voice and that kind of reading because it’s very unpleasant. Canceling my subscription.

This app isn’t worthy of the journalism. Won’t download in the background. How is the audio support to work? Why did you fix something that wasn’t broke?
  • Terrible for audio

I like to listen to the weekly edition while exercising. This app takes far too long to download each edition and, when trying to play audio, it goes into a nearly endless “loading” loop that takes up to 15 minutes to figure out where it left off the preceding day before it starts playing again. I had to revert to the legacy app, which doesn’t have these problems and works smoothly.
